 SUMMER HEAT & TECHNOLOGYAG00629_.gif

Now that the summer heat is in full force…..it’s time to remember safeguards that you should take to protect your technology from these temperature extremes. Heat and humidity wreaks havoc on any battery powered device….be it a cell phone, digital camera, computers, etc. A great article is written about tips and tricks to keep your equipment safe. Here are some of my recommendations:

If you can, don’t leave laptops, phones, or cameras in your main vehicle space for any amount of time after you shut off the engine. Temperatures in your vehicle can quickly rise to 130 + degrees on a hot summer day.

    • If you must travel to a location and cannot bring your equipment with you…it’s recommended to locate all your electronics into the trunk area and if not available to purchase a solar / sun visor for your vehicle. Also it’s always a good tip to crack the windows or open your sunroof to allow heat to escape when parked in the sun for a long period of time.
  • Try to purchase cases and or protectors for your cameras and cell phones to both prevent damage and outside moisture from entering these devices when used outside.
  • Keep cell phones and cameras in your purse or pocket when traveling outside in adverse conditions (e.g. high humidity, rain, snow, etc.)
    • All cell phones come with moisture indicators (small paper dot usually located in the battery compartment) that help insurance companies with claims against water damage.
    • These indicators can still show “wetness” even in the humidity. To limit your risks and possible issues with claims, cases do offer better protection against sealing moisture from entering the battery compartment.
  • Try to keep your laptop computers in their original case or a case when traveling. It doesn’t take much moisture or heat to affect the performance of the laptop and the life of your battery.
